When getting together as a family, there are many activities that can include everyone. Things like family days out can be a great way to spend more time together, but if the weather is bad or you can't take everyone out, you may want to think of other activities. One activity that stands out for most people is cooking or baking. Being able to have everyone in the kitchen helping is a great way to spend some quality time together. They say that the kitchen is the heart of a home, so why not make it the heart of your family too?

Therefore, we have come up with some great recipe ideas for cooking with the family, so you can get stuck in with some homemade pizza, cupcakes and yummy food inspiration - even some of the little ones can join in!

Homemade Pizza

Victoria from the blog Healthy Vix has recommended that you try making homemade pizzas, a fun activity that gets everyone stuck in! "We love making homemade pizzas as a family so even our youngest can help! We'll either make dough or use a flatbread, pop a blob of tomato puree on the base that the kids can easily spread out with the back of a spoon, and have lots of toppings ready chopped that they can add themselves.

"Homemade pizzas are a really easy and fun way to start getting kids excited about cooking and lots of healthy toppings can be added!"

Chocolate coconut bliss balls

If you want something a little lighter and a little sweeter, why not try making some of Zoe's Chocolate and coconut Bliss balls? From the blog My Allergy Kitchen, Zoe loves to provide recipes for families who have food allergies! When asking her for a great recipe for everyone to enjoy she told us "we love making bliss balls! They are super easy to make, even for very young children and require no cooking. It also encourages them to eat lots of healthy ingredients and you can throw in whatever you have in the cupboard to create different combinations. All you need is a food processor. This is my family's favourite bliss ball recipe:"

Ingredients

    • 1 cup dates
    • 1/2 cup raisins
    • 3/4 cup desiccated coconut
    • 2 tbsp coconut oil
    • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
    • 2 tbsp chia seeds/hemp seed powder etc (optional)

Instructions

    • Add all the ingredients to the food processor.
    • Blend for a minute or two until well combined.
    • Remove the blade from the food processor. Using your hands, press the mixture into small balls, about 2cm diameter.

For a lunchtime special Daisy from Daisarella told us to try some of her ham egg cups.

"We love making ham egg cups, and it fascinates my daughter how the eggs go from being really runny before going in the oven and then tasty and baked when they come out."

Here is the recipe so you can try them out:

Ingredients

    • cooking spray
    • 12 slices ham
    • 100gs grated cheddar
    • 12 large eggs
    • salt
    • freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 200C and grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray.
    • Line each cup with a slice of ham and sprinkle with cheddar.
    • Crack an egg into each ham cup and season with salt and pepper.
    • Bake until eggs are cooked through, 12 to 15 minutes (depending on how runny you like your yolks).

Another healthy sweet treat is Sarah's One-Pot Fruity Buns. By combining natural yoghurt with juicy fruit, Sarah has made the perfect bun recipe for 12 individual treats.

"The recipe utilises the small pot that the natural yoghurt comes in to measure out the other ingredients required for the recipe. Making it perfect for getting the kids used to measuring out ingredients and following a simple recipe method."

Ingredients

    • 150g (small pot) of natural yoghurt
    • 1 small yoghurt pot of caster sugar
    • 3 small yoghurt pots of self-raising flour
    • 1 small yoghurt pot of sunflower oil
    • 3 eggs - lightly beaten
    • Finely grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
    • 1/2 small yoghurt pot of sultanas

Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 180C (fan 160C / Gas Mark 4) and line a fairy cake tray with cases.
    • Pour the natural yoghurt into a bowl. Rinse and dry the pot and use it to measure the caster sugar, flour and oil (in that order) into the bowl.
    • Add the eggs and mix everything together until you have a light batter, then add the sultanas and lemon zest. Stirring the mixture once again.
    • Spoon the batter into the cake cases and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.
    • Let them cool on a wire rack before munching as an afternoon treat or added to a picnic.
